Etymology: < first adj. + -ing suffix1. Compare later first v. 3.
Now historical and rare.
A preliminary process in laundering, in which clothes and linen are soaked, rubbed to remove dirt, and then washed in boiling water before further cleansing treatments; an instance of this. Cf. first v. 3.
