Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: finger n., pointer n.
Etymology: < finger n. + pointer n. In quot. 1843 at sense 1 after German Fingerzeig indication, hint (16th cent.; also Middle High German and early modern German fingerzeig accusation, action of pointing the finger). With sense 1 compare earlier fingerpost n. In sense 2 after to point the finger at point v.1 10c and finger-point v.
