Etymology: < Mexican Spanish fondon (1843 or earlier), further etymology unknown.Perhaps compare Spanish fondón , variant of hondón bottom of the inside of a hollow vessel (13th cent.; < †fondo , variant of hondo bottom (see honda n.) + -ón -oon suffix), and also Spanish fundir to melt, to found (see found v.³), and Fondón, the name of various localities in Spain, especially in Galicia and Asturias.
