Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish fondon.
Etymology: < Mexican Spanish fondon (1843 or earlier), further etymology unknown.Perhaps compare Spanish fondón , variant of hondón bottom of the inside of a hollow vessel (13th cent.; < †fondo , variant of hondo bottom (see honda n.) + -ón -oon suffix), and also Spanish fundir to melt, to found (see found v.3), and Fondón, the name of various localities in Spain, especially in Galicia and Asturias.
Metallurgy. Now historical and rare.
A large copper pan used in the extraction of silver from its ores.
