Origin: A borrowing from Sanskrit. Etymons: Sanskrit andhra, āndhra.
Etymology: Partly (i) < Sanskrit andhra, self-designation of a specific ethnic group formerly living in the region and (subsequently) a former kingdom in the region and its royal dynasty, and partly (ii) (now especially with reference to the language) < Sanskrit āndhra (adjective) belonging to the Andhra people (also used as noun; derivative with ablaut change of andhra). In later use (with specific reference to the modern state) after Andhra Pradesh, the name of the state (modern Sanskrit āndhra pradeśa (also with vernacular pronunciation āndhra pradeś) < āndhra + pradeśa region, country, province).
