Etymology: < Japanese andon (1446 or earlier; 1603 in Vocabulario da Lingoa de Iapam), probably < a Middle Chinese compound (compare Chinese háng to go, and Chinese dēng lamp); the lamp is so called on account of being designed for carrying while walking. Compare the corresponding Japanese elements an- to go, and -dō, combining form of -tō light, lamp (both < Middle Chinese), and also andō, a less common variant of andōn (1617 or earlier).
