Etymology: < the name of St Andrew (see Andrew n.) + mass n.1; compare earlier St Andrewmass n. at St Andrew n. 3 and -mas comb. form. Compare Old Frisian Ondreusmissa . In the γ. and δ. forms < the genitive of the name of the saint + mass n.1Compare Old English Andreasmæsse and also Andreas mæssedæg (compare mass-day n.). With Andrewmas even in quot. 1495 compare Old English Sancte Andreas mæsseæfen . On the name form Andreas see Andrew n.
