Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: andro- comb. form, -genesis comb. form.
Etymology: < andro- comb. form + -genesis comb. form. In sense 1 after French †androgénésie (A. Breyer 1862, in Annales de la Société entomologique belge 6 92; earlier in sense ‘succession in the male line’ (1829)). Compare earlier parthenogenesis n. In sense 2 after German Androgenese (M. Verworn 1891, in Pflüger's Archiv ges. Physiol. 51 i. 81).
Biology.
1. The (natural) production of haploid males from unfertilized eggs, as in hymenopterans and other haplodiploid insects; arrenotoky. Obsolete. rare.

1873 Zool. Rec. 1871 8 348 As in Vespa and Polistes, such parthenogenesis is associated with Leuckart's arrhenotocy (for which he [sc. von Siebold] proposes to adopt Breyer's term androgenesis, referring to the power possessed by the unimpregnated ova of producing male individuals).
2. A form of uniparental inheritance in which only the paternal genes contribute to the genome of the offspring, occurring chiefly as a rare abnormality or by artificial induction. Cf. gynogenesis n.Androgenesis as a natural form of reproduction is known in a very small number of plant and animal species.
