Etymology: < Portuguese flamengo, Spanish flamenco, Provençal flamenc, according to Hatzfeld & Darmesteter < Romance flama flame n. + suffix -enc ( < Germanic -ing) often appended in Provençal and occasionally in Old French to nouns of Latin origin. The French name, flamant, is believed to be an alteration of the Provençal form; compare Old French ferrant iron-gray, < ferrenc. So called from the colour.
a. A bird of the genus Phœnicopterus, with bright scarlet plumage, extremely long and slender legs and neck, and a heavy bent bill.
