单词 anthemis
释义

anthemisn.

Brit. /ˈanθəmɪs/, U.S. /ˈænθəmɪs/
Forms: 1600s anthemus, 1600s– anthemis.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin anthemis.
Etymology: < classical Latin anthemis camomile (Pliny, adopted in scientific Latin as a genus name in Linnaeus Flora Lapponica (1737) 243) < Hellenistic Greek ἀνθεμίς , denoting various plants, especially wild camomile < ancient Greek ἄνθεμον camomile (see chrysanthemum n.) + -ίς -id suffix2. Compare French anthémis (1615; the Latin word is earlier cited in a note to Du Pinet's Middle French translation of Pliny (1562; translated as camomille)).
Originally: a camomile, esp. Chamaemelum nobile. In later use: any of the aromatic herbaceous plants and subshrubs of (or formerly of) the Eurasian genus Anthemis (family Asteraceae ( Compositae)), having daisy-like inflorescences and finely divided foliage. Also (usually in form Anthemis): the genus itself. The camomile most used by herbalists, Chamaemelum nobile, was included by Linnaeus in the genus Anthemis. The common name camomile is still occasionally used for certain plants of the genus, as in stinking camomile ( Anthemis cotula) and corn camomile ( A. arvensis).Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) II. 893.
