Etymology: < scientific Latin Anthericum, genus name ( Linnaeus Genera plantarum (1737) 303) < classical Latin anthericus flowering stem of asphodel (Pliny: see below) + scientific Latin -um, neuter ending.Classical Latin anthericus is < ancient Greek ἀνθέρικος flowering stem of asphodel, the plant asphodel, in Hellenistic Greek also flower head of asphodel < the same base as ἀθήρ beard of a grain of barley and similar plants (see atherine n.); compare ancient Greek ἀνθέριξ beard of an ear of corn, ear itself; the nasalization may reflect either association with ancient Greek ἄνθος flower (see anthos n.) or pre-Greek nasalization. Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) I. 310.Most plants of the genus Anthericum are native to Africa, but some species originate in Europe, and are widely grown as ornamentals (esp. A. liliago (St Bernard's lily), and A. ramosa).
