Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; originally modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Greek ἀκούειν , -meter comb. form2; Greek ἄκουσις , -meter comb. form2.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ἀκούειν to hear (see acoustic adj.) + -meter comb. form2, originally after French acoumètre (1821).In α. forms with insertion of -o- connective. In γ. forms < ancient Greek ἀκοή hearing, sense of hearing ( < the same base as ἀκούειν ) + -meter comb. form2; compare Italian acoémetro (1821 or earlier). In δ. forms probably < ancient Greek ἄκουσις hearing ( < ἀκούειν + -σις -sis suffix) + -meter comb. form2.
Medicine. Now historical and rare.
Any of various devices or instruments used to test or measure the sense of hearing.
