Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: antho- comb. form, Greek κώδεια.
Etymology: < antho- comb. form + ancient Greek κώδεια head, in Hellenistic Greek also head of a flower (see codeine n.).In the rare plural form anthocodia (see quot. 1966 at main sense) arising from reinterpretation as plural, after Latin neuter nouns in -um.
Zoology.
The distal or outermost part of a polyp (esp. an octocorallian polyp), which bears the mouth and tentacles and is often retractile. Cf. anthostele n.
