Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek ἄνθος , -oid suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ἄνθος flower (see anthos n.) + -oid suffix. Compare Hellenistic Greek ἀνθώδης flower-like, and also scientific Latin anthoides (1817 as a specific name in zoology).In the following quotation, the form anthoid appears to be a compositorial error for antheroid adj., translating German antherenartig (1838 in the passage translated), lit. ‘anther-like’:1839 W. Francis tr. F. J. F. Meyen Rep. Progress Veg. Physiol. 81 The fructification of the spores is effected by the turbid fluid which proceeds from the apertures of the anthoid organs [Ger. der antherenartigen Organe].
