Etymology: < fluo- comb. form + boric adj. (although this is apparently first attested slightly later), after French fluoborique (J. L. Gay-Lussac & L. J. Thénard 1809, in Mém. de physique et de chim. de la Soc. d'Arcueil 2 210).

Of fluorine and boron; chiefly in fluoboric acid n. (originally) boron trifluoride, BF₃, a corrosive gas with Lewis acid properties, made by the action of hydrofluoric acid on boron oxides; (now) the acid HBF₄, obtained by dissolving boron trifluoride in water.
