Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: a- prefix1, near v.
Etymology: < a- prefix1 + near v. Compare earlier anigh v. and also anear prep.In early use chiefly in the works of R. Stanyhurst. In some early uses (especially in sense 2) difficult to distinguish from anere v. (which Stanyhurst also uses, and may have regarded as the same word).
Now rare (archaic and nonstandard in later use).
