Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps (i) an arbitrary remodelling of fluffy adj. or frilly adj., perhaps suggested by earlier foofaraw adj., or perhaps (ii) < U.S. college slang foof superficial person (1948 or earlier; probably imitative of a puff of wind) + -y suffix1.Perhaps compare Foofy, a name sometimes given to pet dogs, as well as the name of a U.S. 1970s comic strip character.
