释义

anemonen.

Brit. /əˈnɛməni/, U.S. /əˈnɛməni/
Forms:

β. 1600s anenomy, 1700s anenome.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin anemōnē.
Etymology: < classical Latin anemōnē, denoting various plants of the genus Anemone < ancient Greek ἀνεμώνη , literally ‘daughter of the wind’ < ἄνεμος wind (see anemo- comb. form) + -ώνη , feminine patronymic suffix. Compare emony n.Compare Middle French, French anémone (1562; 14th cent. as †anemoine , 1544 as †anemoné ), Spanish anémona (1589; also 1629 as anemón ), anemone (a1566), Portuguese anêmona (1712), Italian anemone (a1498), and also Dutch anemoon (1717; 1593 as †anemone ), German Anemone (1540). N.E.D. (1884) also gives an alternative Botanical Latin pronunciation of (ænĭmōu·ni) /ænɪˈməʊniː/. Specific forms. The β. forms with transposition of nasal consonants are attested from at least the mid 17th cent.; the corresponding pronunciation and the form anenome remain relatively common in current use; compare similarly post-classical Latin anenome (1610 or earlier). Specific senses. In sense 2, the animal is so called because it has colourful tentacles that somewhat resemble the petals of anemone flowers.
