Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: anemo- comb. form, -phile comb. form.
Etymology: < anemo- comb. form + -phile comb. form. Compare earlier anemophily n.In sense 1 after French anémophile, adjective (1889 or earlier) or its model Italian anemofilo, adjective (see anemophilous adj.); quot. 1895 at sense 1 is from a review of a French abstract of an Italian paper (by G. E. Mattei) in the French journal La Nature. In sense 2 after anemophilous adj.; compare French anémophile, noun (1878 or earlier in this sense), German Anemophil (1870 or earlier).
Botany.
1. A seed adapted for dispersal by wind. Obsolete. rare.
