Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; perhaps modelled on a Latin lexical item, or perhaps modelled on an Italian lexical item. Etymons: anemo- comb. form, -scope comb. form.

Etymology: < anemo- comb. form + -scope comb. form, probably after either post-classical Latin anemoscopium ( E. Danti Anemographia (1578) title page) or Italian anemoscopio (1578 in a translation of the same Latin work). Compare also French anémoscope (1683 or earlier).The Latin and Italian words originally denoted an instrument invented by E. Danti (1536–86), Italian astronomer and mathematician, which is the main subject of his treatise Anemographia. Compare also the discussion at anemography n.
