单词 ankara
释义

ankaran.

Brit. /aŋˈkɑːrə/, U.S. /æŋˈkɑrə/, West African English /aŋˈkara/
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a borrowing from a West African language.

Perhaps compare Ankara, regional variant of the name of Accra, the capital city of Ghana ( < Nkran, the Akan name of the city). The type of fabric was introduced into West Africa by the Dutch in the 19th cent., so the word may be of European origin, but no likely etymon has been traced, nor has any connection with the name of Ankara in Turkey (see Angora n.).
A type of fabric especially popular in Nigeria and other countries in West Africa, featuring designs in bold contrasting colours, obtained by a wax printing technique in which wax is applied to both sides of the fabric. Frequently as a modifier.
