Origin: A borrowing from Sanskrit. Etymons: Sanskrit aṅkuśa, aṅkus, aṅkuś.
Etymology: < Sanskrit aṅkuśa (also with vernacular pronunciations aṅkus, aṅkuś), suffixed form < the same base as aṅka curve, hook (see angle n.2).
In South Asia: a goad consisting of a stick with a metal hook on the end used for training and handling elephants.
