Etymology: In Old English (i) cognate with or formed similarly to Middle Dutch voederaer (Dutch †voederaar ), Old High German fuotarari (Middle High German vuoterære , vüeterære , German Fütterer ) < the Germanic base of fodder v. + the Germanic base of -er suffix1. In later use (ii) directly < fodder v. + -er suffix1.With Old English fōdrere compare also foddorbrytta fodderer, herdsman ( < fodder n. + an agent noun from the same base as brit v.1; compare quot. OE at fodder n. Compounds 1).

A person who provides cattle or other animals with fodder. In early use also more generally: a person who provides food (obsolete).In quot. eOE: spec. = forager n. 2a.
