Etymology: < Anglo-Norman anlaz, anelaz, anelace (13th cent. or earlier), variant (with metathesis) of Anglo-Norman allenaz, Anglo-Norman and Old French alenaz, Old French, Middle French alenas long dagger with a narrow triangular blade, polearm with a metal tip of the same form (c1180 in Old French as alesnaz ), apparently < alesne dagger, stiletto, awl (see elsin n.) + -az , -as , suffix ( < classical Latin -āceus : see -aceous suffix; compare e.g. coutelas cutlass n.).Compare post-classical Latin anelacius , anlacius , variants of alenaticus , alennatius , alnacius (frequently from 13th cent. in British sources), apparently < French. The form nanlas shows metanalysis.

A short two-edged knife or dagger typically worn at the girdle.In quot. a1500 apparently: a sharp spike protruding from a piece of head armour for a horse.
