A former monetary unit of South Asia, equivalent to one-sixteenth of a rupee, and consisting of twelve pie (pie n.5); a coin of this value.Under Mughal rule a rupee divided into 16 annas, 64 pice, or 192 pie existed in the northern, Muslim parts of India. After the 1835 Coinage Act this system became standard throughout British India and a uniform coinage was issued. The anna was demonetized in India after decimalization in 1957 and in Pakistan after decimalization in 1961.
