Etymology: < French Annales (in Annales d'histoire économique et sociale , the title of a journal established in 1929 by Lucien Febvre and Marc Bloch): see annals n.

As a modifier: designating a French school of history that focuses on the detailed description and analysis of patterns of social life over time rather than the writing of narratives of political and other events, and often attempts to give a rounded picture of everyday life in a particular place or region.The Annales school is associated with the use of concepts and techniques deriving from other disciplines such as geography, sociology, psychology, anthropology, linguistics, and economics.
