Etymology: < the name of Annam (see Annamese adj.) + -ite suffix1. Compare post-classical Latin Annamitae , plural noun denoting the people (1651), French annamite (1674 or earlier as noun denoting a member of the people, 1680 or earlier as adjective; 1837 or earlier as noun denoting the language), and German Annamit , noun, denoting a member of the people (1672 or earlier). With use as adjective compare earlier Annamitic adj. and also Annamese adj.

1. A native or inhabitant of either of the historical or modern regions of eastern mainland South-east Asia known as Annam (see note); (more generally) a Vietnamese person. Frequently in plural with the: the people of Annam considered collectively; (more generally) the Vietnamese people. Cf. Annamese n. 1.The province of Annam, now part of northern Vietnam, was established as the southernmost province of Imperial China in 679 a.d. until Vietnam gained independence in 939 a.d. In 1887 the name Annam was given by French colonists to a protectorate in the central region of French Indo-China, which was incorporated into the newly formed State of Vietnam in 1948.Now considered offensive by many Vietnamese people, esp. when used to denote a person from outside Annam province.
