Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Annelida.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Annelida (1821 or earlier) < French annélide annelid n. + scientific Latin -ida (see -id suffix3).
Zoology.
With plural (or occasionally singular) agreement: a large phylum comprising the segmented worms, including the classes Polychaeta (ragworms, lugworms, fan worms, etc.), Oligochaeta (earthworms and their relatives), and Hirudinea (leeches). Also with plural agreement (also in form annelida): worms of this phylum (collectively or individually); segmented worms.The Annelida are coelomate and are characterized by metameric segmentation.
