Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Foraminifera n., foraminifer n., -an suffix.
Etymology: < either Foraminifera n. or foraminifer n. + -an suffix. With use as adjective compare earlier foraminiferous adj. and also foraminiferal adj. With use as noun compare earlier foraminifer n.In Foraminiferan fauna (see quot. 1864 at sense A.) probably after German Foraminiferen-Fauna (1863 or earlier).

Of, relating to, or composed of organisms of the phylum Foraminifera. Cf. foraminiferan ooze at ooze n.1 2a.
