Etymology: Originally < post-classical Latin anfractuosus tortuous, sinuous, involved (5th cent.) < classical Latin anfractus anfractus n. + -ōsus -ous suffix; subsequently reinforced by association with Middle French, French anfractueux sinuous (1487; mid 15th cent. as affractueuses (feminine plural) in the French version of quot. ?a1425 at sense 1), (of a rock) craggy (1807 or earlier). Compare anfractuose adj.Compare Spanish anfractuoso (1498), Portuguese anfractuoso (a1719), Italian anfrattuoso (1632). Specific forms. With the form in am- compare classical Latin amfract and forms at anfractus n. Specific senses. In sense 3 apparently punningly after fractious adj.
