单词 fomalhaut
释义

Fomalhautn.

Brit. /ˈfɒml̩əʊt/, /ˈfəʊml̩əʊt/, /ˈfəʊmlhɔːt/, U.S. /ˈfoʊm(ə)lˌ(h)ɔt/, /ˈfoʊm(ə)lˌ(h)ɑt/
Forms: 1500s–1600s Fomahand, 1500s–1700s Fomahant, 1600s– Fomalhaut, 1700s–1800s Fomalhant.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Arabic. Etymons: Latin Fomahant, Fomahand; Arabic *fum al-ḥawt, fam al-ḥūt.
Etymology: < (i) post-classical Latin Fomahant (1530 or earlier), Fomahand (1544 in the passage translated in quot. 1546), and its unattested etymon (ii) Spanish Arabic *fum al-ḥawt, variant of literary Arabic fam al-ḥūt (13th cent. or earlier), literally ‘mouth of the fish’ < fam mouth + al the + ḥūt fish, after Hellenistic Greek τὸ στόμα τοῦ νοτίου ἰχθύς.The Latin forms with -n- reflect typographical errors for intended Fomahaut (which is not attested until later: 1639). Compare early modern German Fomahand (1547 in a translation of the source cited in quot. 1546; German Fomalhaut), Spanish Fomahant (1632 or earlier).
Astronomy.
The first-magnitude star α Piscis Austrini, the brightest star in the constellation Piscis Austrinus (the Southern Fish).
