Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Angelitae.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Angelitae, plural (1551 or earlier) < Byzantine Greek Ἀγγελῖται , plural < the name of Angelium (Byzantine Greek Ἀγγελίον ), a place in Alexandria where their assemblies were held + -ῖται -ite suffix1.Compare French Angélites, plural (1673 or earlier). In plural Angelitae after the Latin plural form.
Church History. Now rare.
A member of a heretical sect which arose in Alexandria in a.d. 494, holding the belief that the Three Persons of the Trinity are not distinct parts of the divine nature. Cf. Damianite n.
