Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French fossette.
Etymology: < French fossette small pit or depression in the surface of a solid structure (1732 in the passage translated in quot. 1733 at fossula n. 1), kind of ulcer of the cornea (1782 or earlier; earlier in senses ‘small depression’ (12th cent. in Old French), ‘dimple’ (c1230)) < fosse fosse n.1 + -ette -ette suffix. Compare earlier fosse n.1 4, fossa n.1, fossule n., fossula n., and fossulet n.
1. Anatomy, Zoology, and Palaeontology. A small pit, depression, or fossa in the surface of a solid structure, as in the crown of a tooth or the cuticle of an arthropod.
