Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: fossil adj., fuel n.
Etymology: < fossil adj. + fuel n.Originally used to refer to fuel obtained by digging below the surface of the earth, as contrasted with fuel such as wood and charcoal (compare fossil adj. 1). In recent use often reinterpreted as referring to the fact that these fuels are composed of fossilized organisms (compare fossil adj. 2).
Combustible material obtained from below ground (and formed from remains of organisms during the geological past), such as coal, petroleum, and natural gas, now esp. contrasted with other sources of energy such as nuclear, solar, and wind power; a material of this kind.
