Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin fossilia.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin fossilia rocks or minerals that can be dug out of the earth (1546 in a work title, or earlier), use as noun of neuter plural of fossilis obtained by digging (see fossil n. and adj.).In Systema naturæ (1735) (in post-classical Latin), Linnaeus divided the mineral realm (Lapidum Regnum) into Petrae, Minerae, and Fossilia.
Now rare.
With plural agreement. Fossils. Originally: †mineral substances found in the earth (cf. fossil n. 2a), esp. (in Linnaeus's system) those which have originated by the petrifaction or concretion of other matter (obsolete). In later use: fossil organisms (cf. fossil n. 2b).
