单词 foul-stinking
释义

foul-stinkingadj.

Brit. /ˌfaʊlˈstɪŋkɪŋ/, U.S. /ˈfaʊlˌstɪŋkɪŋ/
Forms: (Word division in Old English and Middle English examples frequently reflects editorial choices of modern editors of texts, rather than the practice of the manuscripts.) Old English fulstincende, early Middle English fulestincende, early Middle English fule stinkende, Middle English foule stynkande, Middle English fule stinkand, Middle English–1500s foule stynkyng, Middle English–1600s foule stinking, 1500s foule stinkyng, 1500s–1600s foul stinking, 1800s– foul-stinking.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: foul adj., foul adv., stinking adj.
Etymology: Originally < foul adj. + stinking adj.; subsequently probably also partly < foul adv. + stinking adj.In Middle English and early modern English apparently usually written as two words; compare the verb phrase †to stink foul (12th cent.), in which foul can be interpreted as either an adverb or adjective complement. In early modern English, compare also use of the adjectives as a pair qualifying the same noun, e.g. foul, stinking , or foule & stinking . With recent uses (with hyphen) compare e.g. foul-smelling at foul adj. Compounds 1.
rare after 17th cent.
Foul-smelling, stinking. Also figurative, with reference to moral or spiritual corruption.Foul and stinking are commonly found in later English as coordinate adjectives modifying the same noun; examples of this pattern without a comma after foul can sometimes be plausibly interpreted as showing this word, but hyphenated forms are very rare.
