Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French foulard.
Etymology: < French foulard (1747), of uncertain origin; perhaps an alteration of foulé pressed cloth (although this is first attested later: see foule n.) after -ard -ard suffix.
1. A lightweight fabric of silk, or of silk mixed with cotton, with a smooth or twilled surface and typically having a small geometric pattern. Also more generally: any fabric resembling this.
