单词 framboise
释义

framboisen.adj.

Brit. /frɒmˈbwɑːz/, U.S. /ˌfrɑmˈbwɑz/
Forms: 1500s framboye, 1500s–1600s frambois, 1500s–1600s framboys, 1600s framboys (plural), 1600s iramboys (transmission error), 1600s– framboise.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French framboise.
Etymology: < Middle French, French framboise (noun) raspberry (c1175 in Old French: see also note below; 20th cent. or earlier denoting a brandy and a beer), (adjective) raspberry colour (1904), further etymology uncertain and disputed: perhaps either (i) < the Germanic base of broom n. + the Germanic base of berry n.1 (compare the compounds Old Saxon bramberi (Middle Low German bramber ), Old High German bramberi , pramperi (Middle High German brāmber , bromber , German Brombeere ), and also early modern Dutch braembesie , brembesie (1573; Dutch braambezie ), all in sense ‘blackberry’); or (ii) < an unattested post-classical Latin compound *fraga ambrosia ‘ambrosial strawberry’ < post-classical Latin fraga strawberry (reanalysis of classical Latin frāga (plural noun) strawberries (of uncertain origin) as feminine singular noun) + classical Latin ambrosia , feminine of ambrosius ambrosial, divine (see ambrosine n.). However, both of these suggestions encounter difficulties: for important discussions see Französisches etymol. Wörterbuch XV. at *brambasi, E. Gamillscheg Etymol. Wörterbuch der französischen Sprache (ed. 2, 1969) (at cited word). In senses A. 2 and A. 3 apparently showing reborrowing < French.Earlier evidence for the French word may be shown by framboses (plural noun) in an 11th-cent. Latin–Old High German glossary (glossed by Old High German hintperi raspberry (German Himbeere)); however, it is not certain that this does not reflect a form from another Romance language. Compare ( < French) Dutch framboos (1599 as †frambesie, 1621 as †framboysen, plural noun). Compare the following earlier attestation of the French word in an English context:1548 W. Turner Names of Herbes sig. F.vijv Rubus ideus is called..in englishe raspeses or hyndberies, in duch hyndberen, in frenche framboise.
