Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; originally modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: free adj., bench n.
Etymology: < free adj. + bench n., originally after Anglo-Norman franc banc frank bank n. Compare post-classical Latin francus bancus , francbancus (see frank bank n.), liber bancus (from 1246 in British sources). Compare also Middle Low German vrībanksgōt property held as free bench.It is unlikely that there is continuity between the isolated Middle English use and the later evidence. With later use compare free bank n.
Law. Now historical.
The entitlement, in certain circumstances, of a married woman to the retention and use during her lifetime of land or property after the death of her husband; the land or property held by such entitlement, the widow's dower.
