Also: a corresponding tenure of a dignity or office.The term was originally used to denote the holding of an estate in land with the rights of a free man, as opposed to a villein (cf. villeinage n. 1), and was taken to include the holding of an estate or interest in fee simple, in fee tail, or for term of life.
