Originally: a gold coin used in medieval France and equivalent in value to twenty sols or one livre tournois, created under an ordinance of John II in1360; (subsequently) (also pound franc) a French silver coin and money of account of the same value, created under an ordinance of Henri III in 1575 and issued until 1586 (after which only quarter- and half-francs were struck until the currency was superseded in 1642). historical in later use. Also applied historically to various other currencies, not necessarily representing the name used in the issuing country.
