Etymology: < post-classical Latin Francicus of or relating to the Franks, Frankish (6th cent.; 4th cent. as a surname given to the emperor Probus, on account of his victories over the Franks) < Francus Frank n.1 + classical Latin -icus -ic suffix. Compare earlier Frankish adj., French adj. N.E.D. (1897) gives the pronunciation as (fræ·nsik) /ˈfrænsɪk/.
