Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Franckeit.

Etymology: < German Franckeit (A. W. Stelzner 1893, in Neues Jahrb. f. Mineral. 2 iii. 124) < the name of Carl Francke and Ernst (also Ernest) Francke , German mining engineers (see quot. 1893), who discovered the mineral + -it -ite suffix¹, with remodelling of the ending after -ite suffix¹.

Mineralogy.

A lead sulphide mineral also containing tin, iron, and antimony, typically found in association with metamorphic tin deposits and occurring as lustrous greyish-black tabular crystals, notably in the tin mines of Bolivia.Formula FePb₅Sn₃Sb₂S₁₄. Crystal system: triclinic.

1968 I. Kostov Mineral. 183 Cylindrite is found as cylindrical forms..and occurs in the Bolivian mines in paragenesis with franckeïte, pyrite, and sphalerite.

2007 Y. Ohno in J. B. Veliotti New Res. Solid State Chem. i. 21 Pb substitution by Sb seems to play an important role on the stabilization of the franckeite type structure of the composite crystal.
