Etymology: Cognate with or formed similarly to Old Dutch anaginni (Middle Dutch aengin , Dutch aangin ), Old Saxon anaginn , anaginni (Middle Low German ānegin , āneginne ), Old High German anagin , anaginni (Middle High German anegin , aneginne ) < the Germanic base of on- prefix + the Germanic base of the second element of begin v.1 (see discussion at that entry). Compare ongin v. and its probable Germanic etymon (see discussion at ongin v.). Compare also Old Frisian onbijen (compare on- prefix and be- prefix).In some forms apparently influenced by forms of ongin v. (compare e.g. angun at α. forms).
