单词 angina
释义

anginan.

Brit. /anˈdʒʌɪnə/, /ˈandʒᵻnə/, U.S. /ænˈdʒaɪnə/, /ˈændʒənə/
Forms: 1500s–1600s angine, 1500s– angina.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin angina.
Etymology: < classical Latin angina acute infection of the throat characterized by choking, quinsy, or some similar disease < ancient Greek ἀγχόνη strangling ( < ἄγχειν to squeeze, strangle, throttle (see anchoic adj.) + -όνη , suffix forming nouns of instrument), although associated by folk etymology with angere to choke, strangle (see angor n.).Compare Middle French, French angine (1538), Spanish angina (1537), German Angina (16th cent.), all in the sense ‘inflammatory condition of the throat’. It is unclear whether the form angine in quot. 1559 at sense 1 is singular or plural; although the Latin original of this quot. uses the plural form, the construction of the English sentence would also allow for a reading of the English form as singular (compare quot. 1605 at sense 1). (The text of this source uses italics for both English and foreign words, and also uses the digraph æ in Latin words and names, in preference to its post-classical Latin variant e.)
