Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: angio- comb. form, -plasty comb. form.
Etymology: < angio- comb. form + -plasty comb. form. Compare angioplastic adj. 2.Compare German Angioplastik (1894 or earlier). In quot. 1912 probably shortened < earlier lymphangioplasty (1908):1908 W. S. Handley in Lancet 14 Mar. 783/2 (heading) Lymphangioplasty: a new method for the relief of the brawny arm of breast-cancer and for conditions of lymphatic œdema.
Surgery.
Originally: †a surgical procedure performed to improve lymphatic drainage (usually called lymphangioplasty) (obsolete rare); any surgical procedure performed to repair blood vessels. In later use spec.: the procedure of bypassing or restoring patency to a narrowed or blocked section of an artery, esp. a coronary artery, by means of surgery or catheterization; an instance of this; a section of artery treated in this way.balloon angioplasty, percutaneous transluminal angioplasty: see the first element.
