fourth-generation language n. Computing any of various high-level programming languages that more closely resemble natural language than earlier programming languages, typically being designed to be accessible to users with relatively little programming experience; abbreviated 4GL.A characteristic of many fourth-generation languages is that they are declarative rather than procedural: programs written in the language describe what is be done rather than containing a sequence of instructions for doing it.
