Origin: Formed within English, by back-formation; originally modelled on a Dutch lexical item. Etymon: apologetic n.
Etymology: Back-formation < apologetic n., after exegete n., athlete n., etc.; originally after Dutch apologeet (1877 in the passage translated in quot. 1878). Compare German Apologet (1837 or earlier).
Theology.
A person who uses argumentative discourse to defend a doctrine or religion, esp. Christianity; a person skilled in apologetics. Cf. apologetic n. 2.
