Etymology: < classical Latin ad misericordiam < ad to (see ad- prefix) + misericordiam , accusative of misericordia misericord n.The longer phrase post-classical Latin argumentum ad misericordiam is apparently not attested before the 19th cent. (compare quot. 1813¹), and only as a phrase embedded in texts in other languages.
