Etymology: < French frontispice, < medieval Latin frontispicium lit. ‘looking at the forehead’, metoposcopy, hence physiognomy, countenance, face or façade of a building, < Latin front(i)- (see front n.) + spicium, < early Latin specĕre to look. In English the spelling was very early assimilated to that of piece.
