Origin: A borrowing from Hausa. Etymon: Hausa Filā̀nī.
Etymology: < Hausa Filā̀nī, plural of (with prefix indicating an ethnonym) Bàfillācḕ (masculine) and Bàfillātā̀ (feminine), ultimately < Fulfulde Ful- , stem of Fulɓe Fulbe n. Compare earlier Fulbe n., Fula n. and adj., and Pullo n.Although derived from a plural form, Fulani is also used as a singular in English, with a secondary plural form Fulanis.
